This was tough. I love the ungulates ram...Michigan

This was tough. I love the ungulates rampant and the little guy ice fishing, but I can really do without the armed eagle. I dislike the armed eagle, especially coupled with all those scrolls, enough that I would give it to the tiny cows and horses and I believe symmetrically-arranged tiny birds, but damnit Kansas, it's a flag, not the label of the t-shirt you're taking to summer camp. You don't need your name on it.

Iowa

Just to show it's the fist full of armaments and not the eagles I object to, this eagle is adorable. I want him at my birthday party. Wisconsin tries to win me over with a beaver, but no dice. Also, what's the triangle for, Wisconsin?

Missouri

Puking eagle versus ursines rampant. I'm going to pretend neither flag bears the monstrosities those states call seals, and just mark them on the field. So the win goes to to the Netherlands over France.

Indiana

I continue to be impressed by either your ability to match up similar flags or the states' inability to come up with original, or even vaguely appealing ideas. ND should have been paired with Illinois, though, so we could have a better eagle showdown. Indiana gets this one for picking one thing to put on their flag, and by not having an ugly eagle.

Nebraska
These flags are both seals on blue fields, so I have to examine the seals themselves. I think we have a blacksmith in a lake, with a house and a choo-choo train in the background versus, is it a guy mowing the lawn at a polo field? Also the latter motto appears to be "l'e'toile du l'ord" or "the star of filth."

Montana

All I have to say to South Dakota is, "Don't put your tourism slogans on your state flag, and if you're going to put a seal on, at least make it bright and colourful." Montana, you only got away with your crimes against flagdom by not making me want to hurt you. Mind you, given the rest of this bracket, you may survive a few more rounds on that alone.Aviatrixhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13634111275860140084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10779294.post-48787055880411683962011-03-04T07:46:46.113-08:002011-03-04T07:46:46.113-08:00Extra Vote: Indiana.Extra Vote: Indiana.Captain Lhurgoyfnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10779294.post-83690577452659981492011-03-04T07:42:30.412-08:002011-03-04T07:42:30.412-08:001) Michigan

Strange text in other languages!...Michigan - Moose! Strange text in other languages! Not feeling the need to write "MICHIGAN" on it!

Iowa - Isn't it cool that the image was captured when all the text on that ribbon was pointing in the right direction? (I like to think it's because it's a very talented eagle.) All the Wisconsin flag has going for it is that it has a badger on it (though you wouldn't be able to tell from a distance).

Missouri - If you're just going to put your state seal on something choosing a tricolor's nice (certainly better than a plain white background), and I like grizzly bears.

Indiana - Nice flag! +1! (North Dakota: Putting the American Eagle in a slightly more realistic flying posture was a vaguely interesting idea, but here it just looks overburdened and uncomfortable.)

Nebraska - I like the reduced color scheme, and the seal is more legible than Minnesota (though I do like Minnesota's star-thing, if they did it in a way that didn't cut into seal legibility, I would approve.)

Montana - relatively simple/well designed as seals go. South Dakota: I actually like your colors and your design better (even if you seal is illegible at a distance), but "The Mount Rushmore State" is a tourism slogan not a state motto and shouldn't be on a flag.

I second Rebel's call for a bad-ass Eagle showdown (though after seeing American Samoa's entry in the next round, I think that's where my money has to be.)lamanyanahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11646674514760004189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10779294.post-43570598831887002242011-03-04T06:09:22.978-08:002011-03-04T06:09:22.978-08:00I forgot to vote for Indiana over North Dakota.
