The Infinite Art Tournament, Round Four: Signac v. Spencer!

Once again, the Fourth Round brings us to a pair of artists who were alive at the same time, yet who each had his own stylistic thing going on.  To celebrate the first Saturday of October, here's a Fourth Round match between Paul Signac and Sir Stanley Spencer!

Paul Signac
1863 - 1935
French
  • Defeated Luca Signorelli easily in Round 1.
  • Beat Paula Modersohn-Becker in Round 2 by a single vote. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!!!
  • Got past Rennaisance Estonian Michiel Sittow in the Third Round.

Sir Stanley Spencer
1891 - 1959
British
  • Crushed Chaim Soutine in an amazing come-from-behind victory in Round 1.
  • Beat Belgium's famous painter Léon Spilliaert in Round 2.
  • Beat Sodoma in Round 3.

Vote for the artist of your choice in the comments, or any other way that works for you. Commentary and links to additional work are welcome. Fourth-round matches are open for at least three months after posting.

Signac. Feels like a weaker section of the bracket.

Spencer has some great stuff amid his more... interesting efforts, but Signac has more consistently charming pieces. So, Signac.

Signac because it's pretty. He's not necessarily more talented.

It sort of shocks me how much more I like Seurat than Signac, in a theoretical apples to apples to match. Spencer.

I'm the exact opposite of Chuck on the Seurat/Signac question. And, Spencer. I think he's quite interesting.

Looks like times up here, since the last vote was a season ago, and we end with seven votes for Signac and six for Spenser. Signac marches on... but Spenser stays alive, too. We'll see him again once some knots in the Left Bracket get ironed out.
