Gerrit van Honthorst, no contest - just look at all those happy musicians (and he did a lot more paintings of happy musicians, per google image search). I will always vote for happy musicians. And chickens.

Nice match up, and tough. After googling, um...still tough. Ok, van Honthorst.

I love the way van Honthorst captures his subjects' personalities. He gets my vote!

Oh, definitely de Hooch for me. He sets a scene like no one else. His little human dramas are quieter than van Honthorst's, but, my, they are exquisitely staged. I love the glimpses into spaces beyond the main space. And I just want to lie in the sun on those nice tile floors.

I think the way the personalities of the van Honthorst subjects come out so clearly 400 years later are a lovely affirmation of humanity. But I also very much agree with what Mrs. says about de Hooch. The mom in the second painting is so gently delousing her little daughter's hair! And they have a little doggy! And compact bedrooms!

de Hooch.

I guess I never said de Hooch 7, Honthort 3. But that's the way it was.
