The Infinite Art Tournament, Round One: Ivanov v. Jawlensky!

It being the first weekend of an even-numbered month, we should be throwing out a Round Four match today. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, a variety of tie situations in the Right Brackets have left us without a pair of complete Third Round contests. Therefore, we'll continue the ordinary weekend parade of First Round entrants.

Also: Today we begin our journey into the artists whose first name begins with "J".

Alexander Ivanov
1806 - 1858
Russian; worked in Italy

-----

Alexei von Jawlensky
1864 - 1941
Russian; worked in Germany

Vote for the artist of your choice!  Votes go in the comments.  Commentary and links to additional work are welcome.  Polls open for at least one month past posting.

I've got a thing for fauvism. Ingres.

That's not Ingres. It appears to actually be someone named Jawlenski or some such?

Holding my vote until this matter is cleared up.

Verified on the FB feed: Jawlensky.

Who does NOT get my vote.

Ivanov. Let's get some naked Russians in the mix.

Counting pfly for Jawlensky, Elizabeth for Ivanov. Carry on.

In that top one, it looks like the people are sort of avoiding Jesus! "Look at that weirdo! He's all by himself. No one talk to him." Also, why is that guy walking with a staff shaped like a torture implement? I feel like there's some context to this painting that I'm missing, but don't care to look up.

My vote is for Ivanov, still.

Morgan: I'm pretty sure the context is John the Baptist pointing to Jesus and saying, "yo, here comes the guy I've been telling you about."

Now, what ~I'm~ curious about is the context for the SECOND Ivanov.

I'm having a tough choice here... leaning... towards.... Jawlensky.
