The Infinite Art Tournament, Left Bracket Third Round: Sluter v. Leighton!

This is the final new match of the Left Bracket Third Round -- unless there are tiebreakers, and with twelve active contests there could well be tiebreakers.  Plucky, puckish Marcel Duchamp was the final artist to be knocked out in Second Round Elimination, falling to Claus Sluter 3 votes to 9.  Lord Leighton -- "Sir Tiesalot," as they call him backstage here at the Tournament -- ends up here after falling to Andrew Wyeth in the Right Bracket.

Claus Sluter
1380ish - 1405
Dutch; worked in France.

Frederic Leighton
1830 - 1896
British

If I'm to be honest, I'm not sure whether I like Sluter because of his sculpting ability, or if I just really like the look of old stone. Either way, I like Sluter better.

The FB feed yields two votes for Sluter, and two votes for Leighton.

Sluter's big piece is pretty amazing -- but what you don't realize is, it's pretty much all there is. Even one of the photos here is only, like, maybe Sluter, or Sluter and a pal. Whereas Leighton was perhaps a bit of a hack, but he's a hack with a pretty decent canvas trail. This tortured logic, and his exuberant use of orange, leads me to vote Leighton.

I'll go with Sluter, even if he's short on surviving work, because, well, I just think he's better.

Oh, and Jennifer voted for Leighton by email a while back, too.

OK, my friends, it appears that Leighton has returned to his tyin' ways with his pal Sluter here and will irredeemably hold up our little tournament with a tiebreaker... but happily, this resolves the little problem that's been festering up at the Miro/Masseys match. Let the tiebreaking begin!!!
