Left Bracket Fifth Round Elimination: Turner v. Wyeth!

And we arrive at the last match of Left Bracket Fifth Round Elimination! It's another high-powered match -- most of the matches have quite a bit of power, now -- and features J.M.W. Turner (6-1, 64-24, .727) against Andrew Wyeth (6-1, 76-21, .784). It's kind of hard to imagine either of them being voted out of the Tournament, but that's exactly what is going to happen next!

By the way, Turner made it to this round by beating play-in artist M.C. Escher (4-2, 48-31, .608), while Wyeth dispatched Jan Steen (4-2, 37-29, .561).

J.M.W. Turner
1775 - 1850
British
He raised landscape painting to new heights of imagination and profundity. His colossal seas explode out of the frame and his skies envelop you in dizzying symphonies of emotion. He is at one and the same time a consummate observer of nature and a poet who paints from soul to soul.... All great art is complex and Turner’s does justice to the complexity of life.

Andrew Wyeth
1917 - 2009
American
Wyeth’s technical resources are remarkable. His work displays a strong linear quality, and within his limited palette—consisting mostly of earth tones—he achieves a subtly extensive range of colour. His paintings are precise and detailed, yet he moves them beyond photographic naturalism by imbuing them with a sense of subjective emotion. This work also exemplifies his use of unusual angles and his mastery of light.... Art historians have often characterized Wyeth’s work as sentimental and antithetical to the abstract trajectory of 20th-century art. In the face of such criticism, Wyeth’s work has always been popular.
