The Monday Quiz LXXXVI

Great Lakes!
1. It's the biggest lake in South America! And, uh, the world's "highest navigable lake." Seriously, it's at 12,500 feet, and has commercial boat traffic.

2. It's in the United States....

3. Name 'em. All five of 'em. Go.

4. It's the deepest freshwater lake in the world and has by far the greatest water volume -- something like a fifth of the world's fresh surface water, deep in the heart of Eurasia.

5. It's the second deepest and has the second greatest water volume. Somebody's got to be Number Two.

Ooh, stuff I should know but probably don't. The best sort of quiz.

1. Lake Titicaca (funny they didn't teach us this one in grade nine, eh?)
2. Great Salt Lake (shoot, does it have an actual name, or is that it? I think that's Antelope Island in the background)
3. Easy: Superior (the big one), Michigan (the dangling one), Huron (the middle one), Erie (the southernmost one) and Ontario (the easternmost one).
4. Lake Baikal
5. Lake Victoria

Oh, dear.
I'm sure we should all know more geography than we do.....Here are my guesses.

1. Lake Titicaca
2. The Great Salt Lake
3. Lakes Erie, Ontario, Huron, Superior, Michigan ...in no particular order.
4. Aral Sea
5. Lake Victoria, though it may have been renamed by now. And though this is probably not the right answer, either.

3. Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior
4. Lake Geneva - the only lake I can think of in either Eur or Asia

1. Didn't you use this in a quiz not too long ago? I didn't know it then either. Alakazam, Aracauna, Amerigo Vespucci, something like that.

2. Well, it's not one of the greats unless you're being *really* redundant with this quiz, so I'll say The Great Salt.

3. Michigan, Superior, Huron, Erie, Ontario. Not necessarily in that order.

4. Baikal?

5. Wow, a lake big enough to have "Capes." No clue. I'll say Lake Zambezi.

Dropped in the deep end, can't swim very well.

I looked up the one I didn't know after I submitted my answers, so I'm glad to see I have company if not correctitude in the Lake Victoria department. Back when there was a Zanzibar, there was a country sharing the real name with that lake. I am happy to know that the name was preserved on the map, because it's such a nice name.

Long ago I learned that San Mateo Horses Eat Oats, but now I just know the lakes to look at them. They are all beautiful and awe inspiring.

1. Titicaca. Can I say that in public?
2. The Great Salt Lake
3. In no particular order, Michigan, Erie, Huron, Superior, Ontario.
4. Baikal (I think I just made up a word!) Sure is pretty...
5. Lake Victoria

Hey, isn't the Anonymous Chinese/Korean guy gonna send in any answers?

First of all, he's a Taiwanese scammer guy, and I try to erase him as soon as he rears his head.

Second of all,

1. Lake Titicaca. Stop sniggering, Pearson.

2. The Great Salt Lake.

3. "...and further below Lake Ontario takes in what Lake Erie can feed her..."

4. Lake Baikal

5. And the widowmaker: Lake Tanganyika. Lake Victoria is more or less roundish.

Michael5000 said...

...which means our arch-geography dudes, Carto and DrSchnell, take the cake this week. Or, rather, the Exclamation Point.

Michael5000 said...

@Aviatrix: Technically there's still a Zanzibar; it's an island. Zanzibar and Tanganyika were administered seperately as colonies, but then unified at (or maybe just a little bit before, I forget) independance, as the modern country of Tanzania.

But enough of such nonsense. What I really want to know is, are you the same Aviatrix that invented Mark Trail Bingo?!?!

Elaine said...

But, M5000, Lake Victoria is the ONLY lake we could think of. It certainly looked nice and round in "The African Queen," and we knew it was wrong...but we did not want to leave the answer space blank.
Out of respect, you know.

Some of the photos were really pretty. The Salt Lake and Tanganyika ones would make good postcards for a certain someone's collection. If you get my drift.
