The Wednesday Quiz III:7 -- Name That Famous Artist!

The Wednesday Quiz -- Season III -- Quiz 7

Name That Famous Artist!

The Wednesday Quiz is a "closed-book" test of knowledge and intuition; please do not look up answers, ask others for help, or answer as a team.

Questions about the rules and the ~Fabulous Prizes~ are answered here.

This week's Quiz is the first visual one in a while, and a good excuse to throw in some pretty pictures. Each image is a reasonably characteristic, if not necessarily famous, piece by a painter with a distinctive style. For each image,

Who's the painter?

1. Mondrian
2. JWW Turner
3. Van Gogh
4. Picasso
5. Bruegel
6. Albers
7. Grandma Moses
8. Kahlo
9. Grant Wood
10. Miro

Reasonably sure of some of these, guessing on a few. Interesting that you could find obscure examples, as (except for the Van Gogh) I certainly never saw these in art history class.

1 Mondrian (I wonder how you'd do the quilting on that one)
2 Turner (don't try THAT in corduroy!)
3 Van Gogh (running a cute little B&B)
4 Kandinsky (looks like a mural for a Space Pavillion)
5 Bosch (I collaged a couple of those birds in a book once, it would be much harder to use the humans)
6 Rothko (uh, yup)
7 Grandma Moses (this looks like where Nichim's moving to)
8 Frida Kahlo (uh, yup)
9 Grant Wood (that would make a nice model rairoad set)
10 Miro ("Microbe with Quilted Undies")

So how did I miss the physics quiz and log in in a timely fashion for this? I'll be lucky if I can name ten painters.

1. Piet Mondrian
2. Monet
3. van Gogh
4. Picasso
5. Picasso
6. Picasso
7. Picasso
8. Picasso
9. This one is my favourite, I wish I did it.
10. Ooh I remembered another painter! Renoir!

Maybe I understand now how some people felt about the physics one.

As a control, I asked Darth if he wanted to do a quiz on famous painters. He said, "Yes, if it wasn't too much work," and started listing painters.

"Don't you want to look at the artwork?"

"That's more work, and it might stifle my creativity."

1. Picasso
2. Van Gogh
3. that guy who did the Campbell soup cans
4. Person #1 from The Group of Seven
5. Rembrandt
6. Stephen Spielberg
7. the guy who did the paintings in that cave in France
8. Donatelli
9. da Vinci
10. Dan Brown

Chances are, he did better than I did. - Aviatrix

What we got here, using la gringissima's answers, is:

1. Piet Mondrian
2. Claude Monet
3. Vincent Van Gogh
4. Wassily Kandinsky
5. Hieronymous Bosch
6. Mark Rothko
7. Grandma Moses
8. Frida Kahlo
9. Grant Wood
10. Joan Miro

The gringa nailed it, as did Doc Schnell. Quiz legend Rex Parker, telecommuting in from Facebook, was right behind them, as was Quiz legend Mrs.5000.

Aviatrix did way better than Darth.

Wooooooood! And here I was so smug at my knowledge that it was Thomas Hart Benton. Now I'm not even sure if Thomas Hart Benton's the name of an actual painter. Maybe it's one of the actors in "Taps." Criminy.
