WQ III:9 -- Rock Discography

The Wednesday Quiz -- Season III -- Quiz 9

Rock Discography

The Wednesday Quiz is a "closed-book" test of knowledge and intuition; please do not look up answers, ask others for help, or answer as a team.

Questions about the rules and the ~Fabulous Prizes~ are answered here.

---

This week, I have selected twelve (12) rock music acts off of a major North American popular culture magazine's list of the 100 greatest such acts of all time! I have provided you with four or five of their album titles -- leaving out most of the dead giveaways, however. For each list of albums, name that rock music act!

Since I have no idea if this is a really hard or a really easy Quiz, we'll just split the 100 points 12 ways and give 8 1/3 points per correct answer. Rock on!
1. Anthem of the Sun, Aoxomoxoa, American Beauty, Shakedown Street, In the Dark

2. Between the Buttons, Let It Bleed, Goats Head Soup, Tattoo You, Voodoo Lounge

3. Boy, October, War, Pop

4. Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty, To the 5 Boroughs

5. Freak Out!, We're Only in It for the Money, Uncle Meat, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch

6. High Voltage, Let There Be Rock, Flick of the Switch, Who Made Who, Stiff Upper Lip

7. Hunky Dory, Pin Ups ,Station to Station ,Low ,The Buddha of Suburbia

8. Nashville Skyline, Desire, Slow Train Coming, Shot of Love, Oh Mercy

9. Rocket to Russia, End of the Century, Pleasant Dreams, Subterranean Jungle, Too Tough to Die

10. That Stubborn Kinda Fellow, M.P.G., What's Going On, Midnight Love

11. This Year's Model, Armed Forces, Punch the Clock, Blood & Chocolate, Mighty Like a Rose

12. True Blue, Like a Prayer, Ray of Light, Music
Submit your answers, and a blistering guitar solo, in the comments.

Oh. Music. Not my forté. I likely wouldn't have got this if you left the dead giveaways in. I can't name the artists of my own favourite songs. Top rock music of all time you say? That means the last fifty years, right? Did Rock exist before 1960? If they're that great I've probably heard of them, so let me see if you've left some hints in, then fill in the rest with bands I've heard of that might be great and that probably are known outside Canada.

1. ZZ Top - 'cause Zs are like Xs
2. Rolling Stones - I think there's a tongue on it
3. Abba - Easily internationalizable, no word play
4. AC/DC - maybe they're from NYC
5. Pink Floyd - I liked that ship/witch thing
6. The Who - maybe that's a hint
7. Elvis Presley - Has anyone said "hunky dory" since the '50s?
8. Johnny Cash - The slow train one sounds familiar
9. Michael Jackson - I can't think of anyone else.
10. Billy Joel - I like him
11. The Police - I'm running out of names
12. Madonna - Prayer/virgin: close enough

Guitar solo: Twing twing thurumb twing woom woom feedback squeal twing ouch.

Incredibly hard. I don't know ANY of these names. But I never paid much attention to album covers anyway. However, in a conversation this past weekend, I correctly remembered "Equinoxe," the second album by Jean-Michel Jarre.

1. Aoxomoxoa? I think it's the Grateful Dead, yeah?
2. The Rolling Stones. At least two of those albums are actually ok.
3. Is this U2? It feels pretentious enough to be U2, and I can't get them out of my head.
4. m5000 favourite, the Beastie Boys.
5. Frank Zappa and the Mommas. I only know this from the Drowning Witch Droodle.
6. ACDC
7. Bowie, anyone? Buddha gave it away.
8. I think Slow Train Coming is Dylan, but it could have been a cover...
9. The Ramones.
10. I have no idea, so I'll say Hendrix, because no list of musicians misses Hendrix.
11. The Attractions, an acquired taste, I guess.
12. Again, absolutely no idea, but I'll go for Ray Charles, cause that dude would have loved the pun.

My daughter's undergraduate degree (a BA in Physics and Philosophy--she swears it makes sense) is from Hendrix College.

Can I get extra credit for that?

And, Physics and Philosophy is a righteous program of academic study.

Making our big winners this week:

Rocker la gringissima, with a perfect score.

Rocker DrSchnell, with a perfect score.

Rocker Elaine's daughter, who may -- or may not -- be studying philosophy and physics at the same time, but there's no way of checking for sure.

Rocker Dug has an almost-perfect score, but will nonetheless spend a grim hour wondering how he forgot about Bob Dylan's Christian phase.

So, with three episodes of the Wednesday Quiz left, the state of play is:

1. Unwise Owl seizes first with a substantial lead -- but will start to have problems adding more points.
2. la gringissima jumps a place to second, with a little more room to move.
3. Mrs.5000 drops two places to third.
4. DrSchnell is well back from the top three, but with only seven numbers on the board.
5. Phineas is up two places from 7th -- looking for a late-season rally?
6. Cartophiliac is holding steady at sixth.
7. Elizabeth drops two to 7th, but has plenty of room to move.
8. nichim elbows her way into the top ten!
9. Ben trades places with Aviatrix.
10. Aviatrix trades places with Ben.

Elaine waits for a more favorable topic to launch back into the Top Ten, and is meanwhile very proud of her daughter, a highly complex construction of electromagnetic fields among atomic particles that possesses a remarkable but empirically untenable "consciousness" of agency.

Just to fill you in, M5000: yes, said daughter does exist (see early June blog post with picture of graying, bespectacled Mutti with two bespectacled Kinder.) Daughter's BA in Physics and Philosophy (Hendrix, 2003) was followed by MS and Ph.D. in Microelectronics and Photonics (Physics/Engineering field) AND a job (Research Physicist) as a Federal Employee. With health insurance. Your tax dollars at work! (I, on the other hand, did not understand a word of your notation.) On the other, other hand, said daughter does not cook.
