The Wednesday Post

Greetings from the Carmi Motor Inn
Close to Shopping and Dining

In the lamentable decline of the postcard, it seems as though the boring postcard has been especially hard-hit.  They just don't make 'em like they used to.  Which is why Mrs.5000 and I were so delighted, on checking into the Carmi Motor Inn in Penticton, British Columbia -- we are picky about our lodgings, although probably not the same way you are -- to find a motel postcard included in our welcome packet.  SCORE!!!

We did not inquire about the corporate rates, nor did we -- despite the feeling of carnival license that road-tripping usually engenders -- take advantage of our proximity to a Dairy Queen.

The front desk at a small motel sees a lot of down-time, and someone must have filled in some slow minutes, or hours, going through the postcards and correcting the old 604 area code with the new 250 number.  Well, the "new" number.  The 250 area code was implemented in 1997, meaning this postcard is at least seventeen years old.  I can not help wondering whether it is one of the last holdouts, or if there are boxes upon boxes of them, gently aging in a back cupboard among the laundry supplies.

Come for the direct dial telephones, stay for the grassed sitting area.
