The New Monday Quiz IX

1. Who's the famous artist in this self-portrait?

2. "Like Othello and The Winter's Tale, it deals with the themes of innocence and jealousy." In this one, the title character is a king who doesn't have much stage time. The heroine is the spunky Imogen, the good guy is the unfortunately named Posthumus Leonatus, the bad guy is Iachimo, and the even worse guy is Cloten.

3. This pie chart shows the world's industrial use of Element #48.  What's Element #48 called?

4. Rodion Raskolnikov took an axe, and gave the pawnbroker Alyona Ivanovna a whack. When she saw what he had done, he kills her sister, too. This double murder sets off the action of what famous novel?

5. What country printed this 2013 postage stamp?

6. Augustine of Hippo -- the Saint Augustine -- is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of Christianity. Name either of his two most famous books or, if you are really hot-dogging, both of them.

7. In this fancy Venn diagram shows the Natural Numbers, the Rational Numbers, the Imaginary Numbers, and so on.  The entire colored area -- the whole shooting-match -- is encompassed by the label "______________ Numbers."

8. It encompasses a frontal bone, a couple of parietal ones, a couple of temporal bones, and an occipital bone, among other parts.

9. What's the name of this country?

10. Beethoven wrote five for the piano, Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn both wrote one for the violin, and Bach wrote six famous ones that he sent to the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt when he was trying to scrounge up a new gig.  What kind of music are we talking about?

1. Cézanne.
2. People are running around being jealous in Coriolanus, so I'll go for that. You wouldn't pull a "Cressida, Troilus and" on us, I am sure.
3. Chromium, I think. "Nickel-Chromium Battery" is ringing a metallic bell.
4. Crime and Punishment, probably.
5. Croatia?
6. Collected Works of St. Augustine, The. (One or the other of the real answers is floating around in my brain and if it surfaces I will be back.)
7. If Morgan does not get this answer we will have to report him to the university board. I, on the other hand, flunked out of linear algebra and took up dairying, so my answer is "Cheese." That should be the answer for most questions in life, I think.
8. The cranium.
9. Well, I *WAS* going to say Chad, until I looked at the map. I'll go for Cameroon, just because that's the only other one I can think of, other than Congo, but that's in the middle, isn't it?
10. We are talking about concerti.
