Round 5: Ely v. Matisse

"Semifinals" designates the Fourth to Seventh Rounds of the Infinite Art Tournament.  This is a Fifth Round Match.  It pits Timothy Ely (4-0, 38-20, .655) against Henri Matisse (4-0, 39-17, .696). They beat Haeckel and Metsu, respectively.

Timothy Ely
born 1949
American
Timothy C. Ely is an renowned and enigmatic figure in the book world. He is part of that discipline, yet lives and works in a universe apart. His one-of-kind manuscript books combine elaborate and often mysterious painted and drawn folios contained within finely crafted bindings, which are his inventions or variations on traditional binding techniques. Each book carries layers of both materials and meaning. Close study of each drawing can elicit revelations, personal to each viewer.

Henri Matisse
1869 - 1954
French
Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three artists who helped to define the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. Although he was initially labelled a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.

A surprisingly hard matchup. You'd think that Matisse would sweep it because, well, he's Matisse. But I am just entranced by these Ely drawings. I'm going to have to award the decision to Ely. It's not a knockout by any means, but he edges out this time.

Has anyone done color as well as Matisse? Not in my opinion! Go Matisse!

I like Ely a lot, and I don't really like Matisse's late collage stuff. But the Matisses shown here, and his "fauve" stuff in general, I really like. Matisse!

I want to be smart-alecky to Chuckdaddy and say "Yeah, somebody's done color as well as Matisse: TIM ELY! ...which is not quite right, but I still like Mr. Ely's books much better than Mr. Matisse's paintings, so the less famous guy gets my vote.

You know, I've long been a great admirer of Matisse. I could write oodles about what I adore in his middle painting. And I am voting for Tim Ely. Alchemy of the book, baby. All that work that is so mysterious and lovely in two dimensions fuses into something even more intimate and unknowable, when you cradle it in your hands and turn the pages.

So, that was surprising: Matisse and Tim Ely were never more than one vote apart until the count was at 7-7. Then Matisse got two in a row. Then Ely got three in a row. So, Ely wins 10 votes to 9 and progresses against Leonardo da Vinci. Matisse will take on the winner of Goldsworthy/Magritte.
