As much as I like the cat, I will vote Bouguereau.

Kitty! But the cat can't carry it off entirely here, and I am voting for Bouguereau and being naked on the beach.

Yeah, I like Bouguereau's girl with crab, but in general his Victorian treacle factor is just too high for me. I prefer Gwen John's portraits, and their curious meld of restraint and intensity.

Here's a vote-by-email for Bougereau.

Bouguereau! I googled Gwen John to make sure I wasn't missing something, but when I found myself skimming the page of images just looking for more kitties (and there were not a lot), I figured that was a sign. I mean, the first sign was that I love Bouguereau.

P.S. Would the Victorian treacle factor seem so high if you thought of the Victorian penchant for pictures of innocent little girls as being their version of memento mori, as has been argued? Plus, they're awfully well painted, I think--although I'm not sure how the cold but happy lady in painting #1 is keeping the ends of her hair out of the surf with waves like that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Bouguereau is my very favorite artist of choice both for treacle and mild T & A. I don't really like the kind of thing he does, except when he does it.

Bouguereau. No doubt. Amazing figures, but the backgrounds don't FIT. John bores me, even the cat.

And as a group we have selected the amiably trashy Bourguereau 10-3 over Gwen Johns (pictured at top, above). Thanks for voting!
