The Infinite Art Tournament, Left Bracket Third Round: Fabritius v. Van Eyck!

A battle today between two "old Dutch masters" -- but that covers a lot of ground.  Van Eyck lived more than two centuries before Fabritius.  Do you think that's kind of surprising?  I do.  But it doesn't have much to do with the question at hand, to wit: which one's paintings do we like more?  Let's find out!

Carel Fabritius
1622 - 1654
Dutch

Jan Van Eyck
1390ish - 1441
Dutch
  • Beat William Etty in Round 1 by a two-vote swing. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!!!
  • Snuck by Richard Estes in Round 2 by a single vote. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!!!
  • Lost to American Thomas Eakins in Round 3.

Fabritius, though I like Van Eck's green paint a lot.

Fabritius. It took a couple centuries to invent depth in paintings, it seems.

I like Jan Van Eyck. And yea, wow, he was an early one, I didn't realize that.

Ooh, both so good, and so masterful in the details. But definitely Jan van Eyck.

Van Eyck sounds very important, but I don't like how he drew most of his people. A vote for Fabritius.

My vote goes to Van Eyck and his green paint. Especially after slogging through that damn Goldfinch book.

It looks like it's going to be Fabritius, who takes this contest with seven votes for him outnumbering the four for Van Eyck.
