The Thursday Quiz V

Mercy. It's already time for

The Thursday Quiz!

The Thursday Quiz is, as always, a "Is It or Isn't It" game. From the list of twelve items, your job is to determine whether each IS or ISN'T in the week's category.

There has been considerable discussion -- by which I mean carping -- about the Thursday quiz adjudication process. Dear readers, I beg of your pardon: the original rules were not entirely clear. Here is an updated description of the scoring criteria:
  • When the game is up, contestants are ranked in order of score.
  • Any tied scores are ranked in the order that the entries were submitted.
  • First place is the extremely coveted gold star.
  • Second place is the very coveted silver star.
  • Third place is the somewhat coveted blue star, since bronze looks too much like gold.
  • Retroactively to last week, anyone tieing with but submitting their entry subsequent to the third place winner is awarded the green star!
  • But keep in mind that it is the journey, not the destination.

Also, and very importantly:

  • Anyone who elects to skip a week because they don't know much about a topic is a big chicken and a fuddy-duddy.
Remember always the keystone of all that is right and good:

No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. The Thursday
Quiz is a POP quiz. Violators will be drawn and quartered.

This Week's Category just goes to show that the Thursday Quiz isn't all stuffy:

The Novels of Stephen King
Let's shred.

1. Bag of Bones
2. Coriolanus
3. Cycle of the Werewolf
4. Dark Horse
5. Desperation
6. Erstwhile
7. The Horror
8. The House on Blood Street
9. Insomnia
10. Misery
11. The Plant
12. Ran Red

The race is to the swift! And to the knowledgeable! And lucky! Submit your answers as a comment.

"ooh ooh. don't pick me," she says, slinking down in her back row seat.

Since I don't want to be a big chicken or a fuddy-duddy and I'm a hopeless night owl, I'll take this blasted quiz and call it a night.

1. Bag of Bone: is--why not, that's how I feel right now
2. Coriolanus: isn't--haven't we seen this one from one of your previous lists?
3. Cycle of the Werewolf: isn't--no idea why
4. Dark Horse: is--no idea why
5. Desperation: is--well, he tends toward the whole one-word title thing, doesn't he?
6. Erstwhile: isn't--one word, but to thither and yon
7. The Horror: isn't--too obvious, which makes me want to choose it
8. The House on Blood Street: isn't--sounds more like a short story
9. Insomnia: is--one word
10. Misery: is--'cuz it is
11. The Plant: is--why not
12. Ran Red: isn't--but sounds like redrum and you know what that is backwards

I'm swift, but clearly not the least bit knowledgeable on this topic. Perhaps luck will come my way? It'd take a miracle.

Oh, Jeez. I hereby wildly guess:
1,4,6,8,9,10. Ignorance is bliss, no?

This game would be much more fun if it wasn't 12 questions. Can't we narrow it down to, say, five?

Thanks for the clarification of the rules! This week, though, there will be no star for me. But I try:

1. Bag of Bones: Isn't. Or, at least, I certainly hope it isn't. What a hideous name for a novel!
2. Coriolanus: Is?
3. Cycle of the Werewolf: Isn't?
4. Dark Horse: Is?
5. Desperation: Is?
6. Erstwhile: Isn't? (ditto my comment on #1)
7. The Horror: Isn't
8. The House on Blood Street: Isn't
9. Insomnia: Is
10. Misery: Is
11. The Plant: Isn't
12. Ran Red: Isn't. I think it's Red Rum, but I could be making that up.

Oh man! Now I have to answer to avoid the dreaded (but apt) title of Fuddy-Duddy.

Ok - 10 is, all the rest aren't.

I'm no chicken!

And I'm also guessing 100% here.

1.Y
2.N
3.N
4.Y
5.Y
6.Y
7.N
8.Y
9.Y
10.Y
11.N
12.Y

By the way: Regarding your earlier post about feeling outclassed in the quiz department: I had a similar feeling when I laughed my guts out after reading your "culture collision" post. Here I am trying to be witty as I blog about my life in Korea, and you just whip out a flawless, tight vignette like that. Damn you.

Well, this is one I'm sure to fail at. I'm mostly guessing, I must confess.

1. Bag of Bones -- Is. Maybe.
2. Coriolanus -- Ain't
3. Cycle of the Werewolf -- Ain't
4. Dark Horse -- Ain't. Seems like this ought to be the name of a Dick Francis novel.
5. Desperation -- Ain't
6. Erstwhile -- Ain't
7. The Horror -- Ain't
8. The House on Blood Street -- Ain't
9. Insomnia -- Ain't
10. Misery -- Yes. In fact, this is the only Stephen King novel I have ever started. As you can guess from that statement, I did not finish it.
11. The Plant -- Ain't
12. Ran Red -- Ain't

That's only two, so surely I've got this way wrong.

Heavens! Such lack of love for the colossus of genre fiction. I've always found him to be a very capable and engrossing craftsman, myself. But I've only really read his earlier stuff.

The actual books were Bag of Bones, Cycle of the Werewolf, Desperation, Misery, the Plant, and Insomnia.

Coriolanus is a Shakespeare Play. "The Horror" is what the Marlon Brando character says at the end of Apocalypse Now. The other fake Stephen King titles were just excellent fun to make up.

The unsuspecting winners this week are:

Gold: Dynasty-Building Karin
Silver: Stalwart Rex Parker
Blue: First-time Star Winner Mark Witteman

Kudos to all for not being big chickens. We'll get back to more high-culture claptrap next week.

I had to be sick forever last week. This is one I could have done. he is such a fun read when he reads. Darnit.

I read above and sorry about not getting into the second interview.

I need to get here early this coming Thursday and if I don't know it, I am guessing and talking smack. Hope that's okay.
