The Thursday Quiz LXVII

The Thursday Quiz!

This season, the Thursday Quiz is a sequence game. Arrange the ten items in the proper sequence!

Remember always the Fundamental Rules of the Thursday Quiz:

1. The Thursday Quiz is a POP quiz. No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. Violators will lose their internet privileges. All of them. Permanently.
2. As long as you made it this far, you might as well play. It's not all about winning, you know. It's about using your knowledge and reason and making an educated guess. C'mon! It'll be fun!
The Planets

List these members of our beautiful and historic solar system in order... hey! Not so fast, hotshot! List them in order by size, from smallest to largest.

A: Earth

B: Earth’s Moon

C: Jupiter

D: Mars

E: Mercury

F: Disgraced former planet Pluto

G: Saturn

H: Sun

I: Uranus or Neptune (which are pretty much the same size)

J: Venus

Post your answers in the comments.

I am refusing to play this quiz on the grounds that I am still in mourning that Pluto has lost it's planet statias. Also did you know that your tag for this post is the Monday quiz? This is not the Monday quiz but the Thursday quiz. Time to create a new tag.

As soon as I saw the topic, I said, "Oh no! I don't know which is larger, Uranus or Neptune!" Then I saw you combined them. You are so thoughtful.

Yankee: If you are not happy with the laws here in our solar system, go join another one!

Oh, wow. . . a whole new area of ignorance for me!

*ahem* I mean, of course, a whole new topic to learn something about.

At any rate, no stars for me today!

this could go either way... 1) I took Astronomy in college and it was the first and only class I'd ever failed (including math people!!) but 2) I recently had to teach my horrid horrid children a unit on the planets... we'll see if I got anything out of it.

F - Pluto (which will always be a planet in my heart)
B - The Earth's Moon
E - Mercury
D - Mars
A - Earth (I think Mars, Earth & Venus are pretty close in size, I refuse to feel bad if I got these wrong)
J - Venus
G - Saturn
I - Uranus / Neptune "The Gas Giants"
C - Jupiter
H - The Sun

Unlike Mt Erebus, which every New Zealander of over a certain age knows for very sad reasons (major plane crash), I don't have any advantage on these. In fact, I don't have much of anything. So, here's my guesses:

Earth's wee Moon
Sad Pluto
Mercury
Mars
Earth
Venus
Uranus/Nepture
Saturn
Big Jupiter
Bigger Sun

And what's all this business about it not being about winning? Do you not know that the very reason your quizzes are intimidating is because I don't get a chance to study up first.

F. wealthy Pluto

J. seductive Venus
D. war-bringing Mars
A. Mother Earth
I. Great Grandpa Uranus/Storm-Bringing Neptune
G. Grandfather Saturn
C. Father Jupiter
H. The Sun

My first ever entry - what a nerve-wracking experience. I've loved perusing this blog since finding it a couple weeks ago!

Obviously I haven't read the comments above me so I can only assume that I'm the 19th consecutive person to make this joke but:

Uranus is the same size as Neptune? Maybe you should include more fiber in your diet.

Michael5000 said...

Well, we almost managed to make it through the Quiz without a Uranus joke. Oh well, at least no one mentioned that, although Saturn's are more famous, there are also rings around Uranus. No, really, there are!

Anyway:

1. Piddly Pluto
2. The Earth's Moon, good ol' Luna
3. Mercury
4. Mars
5. Venus
6. Earth! Home Planet of the Life and Times of Michael5000!
7. Neptune/Uranus
8. Saturn, with or without rings
9. Jupiter
10. The Sun, good ol' Sol, which comprises slightly more than 99.8% of the mass in the solar system, and is therefore the biggest by quite a stretch.

I thought I had a shooter's chance until you said Uranus and Neptune were near the same size. I'm basing all my answers on this planet game I played as a child and my memory was Uranus was way bigger. So either my memory or board were wrong. Either way, a bad sign...

Earth’s Moon
Pluto
Mercury
Mars
Earth
Venus
Uranus or Neptune
Saturn
Jupiter
Sun

Which gives us three perfecto contestants this week:

Taking the TQLXVII Gold Star is the always dangerous DrSchnell. It is his 6th Gold and his 21st Star overall, and this moves him into undisputed second place on the list of all-time Gold Star winners.

Newcomer LegalMist strikes Silver on her first outing, becoming the 48th human being to bring home some Thursday Quiz bling. Welcome to the show, LegalMist!

Ben, who took the TQLXIII Blue Star to begin his collection, now takes the TQLXVII Blue for a matched set.

Two Green Star Winners had just a single reversal. Mrs.5000 takes her 9th Green -- but as her 21st Star overall, it also keeps her tied for second with DrSchnell on the overall leaderboard. Boo, with her 6th Green, has 12 Stars overall and moves into a tie (with Karin) for eighth place on the overall leaderboard.

w00t!

When did the Life and Times move?

@Yank: I am sorry for your loss. Also, thanks for the correction.

@Carto: I try to be a good host.

@Serendipity: ...lots of planets, though!

@Karin: Staying up late is perfectly safe in moderation.

@Rebel: "horrid horrid children" is your affectionate way of referring to a bunch of loveable scamps, I'll bet.

@blythe: A little early to be drinking, isn't it?

@Karma: We did! It's called "Sol!" Arguably, we should name it better....

@Eliz: ba-da-da dum!dum! dum!dum!dum!
ba-da-da dum!dum! dum!dum!dum!
BA-DA-DA DUM!DUM! DUM!DUM!DUM!
BA-DA-DA DUM!DUM! DUM!DUM!DUM!

@sandy: Yeah, I knew you had an advantage on Monday. Makes up for the thousand times I've asked about the only unicameral state legislature and so on.

@PB: Thanks and welcome aboard!

@Kadonk: You mighta FELT like a moron, but you didn't ANSWER like a moron.

@Phineas: Bachelor of Forest Engineering?

@Chuckdaddy: Good to see you on the Quiz! Just to clarify for the rules committee, your answers counted. Unfortunately, you were a few points away from Starring.

Woo-hoo, I won I won!

But I have to confess, it's not really my first time. I failed miserably on the "put the historical events in order" contest a couple of weeks ago. :)

Still, I'm happy to have done better this time around!

Thanks for the fun quizzes.
