The Wednesday Quiz I:10 -- Rockers

The Wednesday Quiz -- Season I -- Quiz 10

Rockers

The Wednesday Quiz is a test of knowledge and intuition. Looking up answers or asking your buddy is lame. Questions about the rules are answered here.

This week's Quiz is a identification game. For each image,

Name the Rocker(s)

Here are fifteen images of people and bands who regularly appear on lists of the most influential rock artists of all time. Identify them for 6 2/3 points apiece. If there's more than one person in the photo, give the band name for full credit. [clarification: no, you don't have to list individual band members, unless there is a definite band leader (e.g. "Prince and the New Power Generation").]

I've got the feeling my age will count against me with some of these, but let's see how we go.

1. Beatles - L to R, JL, GH, PM & RS.
2. David "Ziggy Stardust" Bowie (you can see the tw odifferent coloured eyes, even in B&W)
3. Kurt Cobain, yes? I guess this is Nirvana, then. Oh the rock and roll lifestyle...
4. I dunno if this is Bob Marley, so these are the Wailers.
5. The Rolling Stones (They've well and truly started o the drugs already, by the looks of it)
6. The Police (looking weird as usual)
7. The Who? Normally they'd have a drum with their name on it, though...
8. Jimi Hendrix Experience
9. Oh man, that's the Grateful Dead! Surprised I got this one.
10. Springsteen and the E Street Band
11. Talking Heads. Oh man, why don't bands dress like that any more?
12. That's U2, this is used as a compilation album cover, right?
13. Led Zepplin? MY first thought was Def Leppard (I have no idea why) but all of these guys have arms.
14. Oh, they look soooo familiar... I'll say Floyd, just because you have all the other supergroups here, but it could be anyone around the same time.
15. Beastie Boys. These guys don't belong with all these other classics, surely?

Hrmm...actually, that wasn't so bad.

OK, I dont' mean to complain, but I see a whole lot of dudes here. Only one band has a female headliner, and then one with a female back up singer. This following last weeks quiz with only one female artist. It does seem to be a man's world, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Or maybe I'm just bitter because I'm going to do better on this quiz than last week, and I was an art major. Here goes...

1. the Beatles
2. David Bowie
3. Nirvana
4. Bob Marley and the Wailers
5. The Rolling Stones
6. The Police
7. The WHo
8. Jimi Hendrix Experience

10. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
11. The Talking Heads
12. U2
13. Led Zeppelin
14. The Allman Brothers?

And a delight it is to see such past quiz legends as KarmaSartre, Critical Bill, and Kadonkadonk, and even lamanyana and Dr. Ken re-enter the fray.

With two more weeks left in the season, here's the top six contenders:

1. DrSchnell: 741.67
2. la gringissima: 724.16
3. Mrs.5000: 666.67
4. Elaine: 571.67
5. Cartophiliac: 558.33
6. Ben: 515.33

Despite a near-perfect performance this week, la gringissima lost the lead as DrSchnell shed a weak 8th-best score. Cartophiliac closed in on Elaine, and Ben remains in contention with a strong showing. What did I say about how many contestants get prizes? I'll have to look it up....

Have you been bribed? Is someone sending chocolate chip cookies?

I know my performance was abysmal, but....

Michael5000 said...

Elaine --

The best 8 scores out of the 12 count for the season. Your score this week wasn't one of your top eight, so it dropped out, is all.

Similarly, DrSchnell and La Gringissima had almost the exact same score -- but since the good Doctor's 8th place score had been pretty weak, he suddenly shot ahead.

It only FEELS like robbery. : )

Michael5000 said...

Regarding the complaint made by Balaywho: there were frequent complaints back in the Thursday Quiz days about my idiosyncratic choices, so these days when I make a list of great (painters, rockers, whatever) I find three or four outside lists and cross-correlate. So here, the problem is not (much) with Michael5000, but with the lists of great rockers, or perhaps with the society and its affiliated institutions that render rockers great, or, conceivably, with the female rockers. I note this last only as a theoretical possibility.

In regards to the Unwise Owls' comment regarding the Beastie Boys, I cite both the above and recently uncovered evidence that the B-Boys will still be listened to two centuries hence. If they are good enough for the young Captain Kirk, they are good enough for me. (cf. the very first post on this blog)

Michael5000 said...

@sis: "The Name of this Band is Talking Heads" = nice.

KarmaSartre said...

Stop making sense.

@Karma: "Girlfriend is Better" is surely on my all-time short list of favorite songs.

Elaine said...

I just have to tell: one of my friends took the quiz (she is 10 yrs older than I)--and she got FIVE correct. I am terribly humiliated of course..... but pain was assuaged by the fact that she spelled one band's name thusly: the Beetles.

See? I may be lame, but maybe I am not THE Lamest-- (at least, not all the time.)

And now I understand M5000's cruel scoring system, too. Drop my lowest score? I can't afford to lose points to ANYthing! (exit, pursued by a hamster...)

UnwiseOwl said...

Bah, just because you and Captain Kirk have the same eclectic taste in 'music'. One your advice, though, I'll give the BBoys another chance and go borrow their CDs from my cousin.
The whole idea of current music being used in futuristic settings, often with the lampshading of it being 'classical' almost always makes me cringe, though. It's one of the tackier things that Hollywood likes to do, and always makes me roll my eyes.

Michael5000 said...

Owl: I agree with you about classical music of the future. And for what it's worth, I am not particularly an avid Beastie Boys fan. Once in a blue moon, I'll fire up my old "Ill Communication" CD, which I think is quite good.
