Vote for the two artists of your choice! Votes generally go in the comments, but have been known to arrive by email, by postcard, or in a sealed envelope.

Please note that you may vote only once in each face-off.  Opining that both of the artists in one of the two face-offs is superior to both of the artists in the other is fine, but casting your votes for two artists in the same face-off is not permissible.

The best one here is clearly the 4th one, entitled, "Sniff My Helmet, Bitch."

I like the smug lady with the fur cloak and the harp.

Are you sure that top picture isn't upside-down?

Either way: Batoni, love the fabrics, and the expression of that woman. Plus - cute puppy!

#2-hmm... I'm not impressed with either of them.

Is it just me, or do both of the Baselitz paintings look upside-down?

Since I'm commenting anyway, I guess I'll vote:

Batoni and Bellini

First matchup: Baselitz, although I'm not enthusiastic about either.

Second matchup: Ooh, tough! I'm thinking Mr. G. Bellini, but it's close.

That he has paintings that are upside-down is almost enough to not even let me consider him, but I'm going Baselitz anyway. And I do agree with Voron X's comment from the first round that the Google search finds some better and more diverse pictures (Not that I don't think your picking process isn't usually stellar, Michael).

For the second matchup I'll also go modern and pick Baumeister.

The Baselitz paintings are, well, they are oriented in the direction intended by the artist. He, um, well.... Dang. To say "his paintings are upside down" really opens a conceptual barrel of monkeys. But you get my drift.

I'm not surprised... yet another reason why I didn't vote for him. I don't really like art that needs to be explained. I'm provincial like that. ;)

Dr. Ken -- I see what you did there, but I'm not sure it quite constitutes a vote for Batoni...

Reb -- I'd almost say I agree with you, but I've also found that explanation and analysis and discussion can hugely deepen my experience of art, so... I want to keep myself open to both the intuitive and the analytical, know what I'm sayin'? And to be fair, in our own creative corner, don't we sometimes read the tags at a quilt show and then look again and say "oooooh!"

Having said that, I have not found anything to capture my vote in either Baselitz or Batoni. Whereas I like both Gentile Bellini AND Baumeister. Dang.

I'll abstain from #1, and break for Baumeister on #2.

Vote by mail: Batoni ("I like the smug lady next to the Greco-Roman head") and Baumeister.

Voting is concluded in Faceoff #1, Batoni taking Baselitz 7-2 with a couple overt abstentions and probably a number of covert ones as well.

Faceoff #2 is still open for voting.

And now time's swift arrow has brought the second faceoff to a close, with G. Bellini sneaking by Baumeister with a tepid 5-4 mandate. He'll be duking it out with Jacopo Bassano in the next round.
