Vote for the two artists of your choice! Votes generally go in the comments, but have been known to arrive by email, by postcard, or in a sealed envelope.

Please note that you may vote only once in each face-off.  Opining that both of the artists in one of the two face-offs is superior to the other is fine, but casting your votes for two artists in the same face-off is not permissible.

Hmm, well I'm a bit of a sucker for pop art and these two Böcklin paintings don't really move me, but after a bit of additional checking I much prefer Böcklin. The self-portrait at the top of his page on Wikipedia was zing! Then googling other paintings confirmed it. Böcklin.

On the second one, neither of the Bomberg examples move me, and the Bordones look at least technically quite good. But again some additional checking reversed that initial impression. There's bunches of Bombergs I like more than these two, even if a lot of them look like variations on Duchamp's ''Nude Descending a Staircase''. Still, Bomberg.

Blake, Bordone.

Böcklin and Bordonne, they're my votes.

But I'd like to get a special mention to Peter Blake, for his work with The Beatles.

I really enjoy Böcklin, especially that villa in the first picture - wouldn't you want to visit there? In the second matchup, I don't much care for either. I'll vote Bordone.

Blake! Bomberg!

A strong vote for Blake. I feel sort of bad that the grey Bocklins have such a lively opponent.

I was at first leaning Bordone. I find that second one of his so interesting. I love how you focus on the main scene, but what's out the window is just amazing. Still, when I looked up his other pictures they were pretty cupidy and corsetty. And I do really enjoy Bomberg's Pre-ww1 abstract pieces.

Blake and Bomberg

I'm going to go with Sir Blake, despite TOTALLY agreeing with pfly about the Bocklin self portrait. In fact, crap, pfly's right. I'm going to go with Bocklin. (I noticed today that El Burrito Loco #3, my workday tacqueria of choice, has a drive-thru menu that uses the Arnold Bocklin font. True story!)

And Bomberg.

Pfly for the win! I mean, yes, Bocklin wins for the self-portrait if nothing else.

And Bordone because wow, not even close. Just googling and glancing through some of his other work confirms my initial infatuation with him, even if he is kind of lame at painting breasts for a guy who painted so many of them. I particularly love the faces of the men in his portraits. So expressive!

Peter Blake and Böcklin are locked in a 5-5 tie, which will hold them over for competition against the next tie in this bracket. Bomberg holds out against Bordone 6-4, and will advance to take on Boccioni in the Left Bracket Second Round.

Voting's closed on this one.
