The Jazz Thing, Round 1: Powell v. Mobley

The Jazz Thing, Round 1 (40 Word/Album Limit)

#17 "The Genius of Bud Powell" (1956) v. #97 Hank Mobley, "Soul Station" (1960).

Very virtuosic piano playing in what I believe is called the "bop" style.  The cat could really find his way around a keyboard.  Yet the record doesn't especially move me.

And:

This is some pretty sweet small-ensemble playing.  Mobley's saxophone leads are smooth and, yes, soulful, and there is a pleasant upbeat swing to the whole business.  Great rhythm section.  A very easy record to like.
