The Infinite Art Tournament, Left Bracket Second Round: Calder v. Canaletto!

Today was supposed to be a Left Bracket Second Round match between the winners of Bellotto/Bierstadt and Bingham/Bellows, but Alison swept down at the last second to create a tie in the latter match.  No problem; we'll just use the week to push a different piece of the Left Bracket along.

Alexander Calder
1898 - 1975
American

Lost to Gustave Caillebotte in Round 1.
Tore into Italian Alberto Burri in Round 1 Elimination.

Canaletto
1697 - 1768
Italian (Venetian); also worked in England

Beat early Flemish master Robert Campin in Round 1 by a single vote. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!!!
Lambasted by Caravaggio in Round 2.

Vote for the artist of your choice in the comments, or any other way that works for you. Commentary and links to additional work are welcome. Polls open for at least one month past posting, but likely much longer.

After getting the opportunity to see some of his works up close and in person a few months ago, I am enthusiastically supporting Canaletto.

Hmm, as much as I like the mobiles, I think I will say Canaletto.

Calder. He's more than mobiles.

I used to not like Calder, but then I saw one of his mobiles up close and I liked it! So I'll vote for him.

I am going for Calder here. I admire his ingenuity and playfulness--the lighthearted investigations in motion, shape, and balance.

CALDER!

I am, in general, less attracted to the more abstract elements of modern art (with exceptions, certainly). The Calder pieces here elicit some level of interest, but I remain reserved. With that said, I can't say that any of the Canaletto pieces evoked any meaningful response at all, so for the time being I will give a somewhat tepid vote to Calder.

Er, Calder, I guess.

Venice is purty,

A vote for the well-named Canaletto

Calder is more than mobiles, but I'm pretty sure it's the mobiles I'm voting for.

Calder did something new and fun and kinetic, which I like even when the actual pieces don't always do much for me. Canaletto painted an extraordinarily good souvenir, which I quite respect (although the bottom piece here seems strangely un-kinetic to me). But my vote goes to Calder.

Well, that's that -- Calder improves to 2 and 1 with a 9-4 victory over Canaletto.
