The Thursday Quiz IIIL

The Thursday Quiz!

The Thursday Quiz is an "Is It or Isn't It" game. From the list of twelve items, your job is to determine whether each IS or ISN'T a true example of the week's category.

Remember always what separates us from the apes:

No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. The Thursday
Quiz is a POP quiz. Violators will be thrown to the
Pantherae leo.
This Week's Category will confront you with your own animal nature!

Not much science for me, but plenty of Latin. So maybe this can fall into place. Indulge me to permit showing my work.

1. yes - flat (?) nose
2. yes - whale / baleen, ok
3. no - taurus = bull
4. yes - lupus / wolf, familiaris / common = dog.
5. yes - droso sounds bug like
6. no - echinacea = stuff my mom takes for colds. Looks like wheat to me, and not too purple, at that.
7. yes - caballus? But equus is enough.
8. yes - sounds perfect but not sure why.
9. yes - almost no on a technicality.
10. no - but almost
11. no - not in the ballpark
12. no - just seems wrong, especially with that taurus up there in the 3 spot.

Great pictures.

1. Is

3. Isn't (that's Echinacea purpurea)
4. Is
5. Is (what an awesome name)
6. Isn't (that's some kind of Triticus)
7. Is
8. Is
9. Is. I know you probably put this particular exemplar in for the controversy, so for the record my position is that we cannot reject manifestations of evil as other than human if we are to comprehend the true meaning(s) of our existence. On the other hand, I'd rather look at cute kitties any day.
10. Isn't. (Is cute, though.)
11. Isn't.
12. Isn't. That's some kind of Bos. Did you just switch the answers around?

1. no

3. no
4. yes
5. yes
6. no
7. yes
8. yes
9. I'll say no, since I have seen precious little evidence over the last 7+ years to the contrary. I believe he belongs to the genus/species petrolius myopia. He has bred with a member of homo sapiens, but then again, interspecies breeding is not unheard of in the animal kingdom. If there's a peer-reviewed scientific publication out there to indicate this individual's species identity, please post a link here!
10. no
11. no
12. no
Methinks also that all (or many, or at least some of)the wrong answers would be right if switched with some of the other wrong answers. Like Ecinacea. #9 excepted, of course.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say 'No' to all of them because I'm in a contrary mood right now (I need more painkillers). Besides "I'd Rather Be a Triticum Aestivum" just doesn't sound right to me.
@drschnell - I think maybe you give too much credit to Lynne Cheney by describing her as a member of "homo sapiens"

For number nine, I did hear that he's really a lizard man underneath, just like the V miniseries starring Beastmaster's Mark Singer.

Noble Quiz Takers! Let's look at some answers!

1. Anas platyrhynchos -- IS! Go Ducks!

2. Balaenoptera musculus -- IS.

3. Bos taurus -- ISN'T. You can find an especially pretty Bos taurus as the false illustration for #12.

4. Canis lupus familiaris -- ARF! I mean, IS!

5. Drosophila melanogaster -- IS! (If it seemed like an obscure choice, read up on the biosciences.)

6. Echinacea purpurea -- ISN'T. The Illustration for #3 is.

7. Equus caballus -- IS!

8. Gallus gallus -- CLUCK!

9. Homo sapiens -- IS, of course.

10. Panthera tigris -- No, no. What you've got there is a Felis catus. P. tigris iz a mighty tiger!

11. Sus scrofa domestica -- ISN'T. That would be a piggie. Corn is Zea mays.

12. Triticum aestivum -- ISN'T. The illustration for #6 is T. aestivum.

You had to have either perfect taxonomy or perfect Latin to score a Star today. Here's who nailed the Quiz with 12/12:

Taking the TQXLVII Gold Star, his second and his fifth Star overall, is gs49! That's five Stars in the last seven Quizzes, as gs49 opens up a can o' general knowledge on the TQ Fifth Season.

Right behind him to claim the Silver, his fourth and his twelfth Star over all, is Quiz stalwart Phineas! Phineas moves into the fourth spot on the all-time Star earnings list.

Picking up her second Blue Star, her fourth overall, is Nichim!

Well done to all the dapper and erudite takers of the TQXXXXIIIX!!

Might I point out that #9 is a "Homo Sapiens Sapiens"? Unless you're calling him a Neanderthal. Some of the people giving answers could agree with that.

Michael5000 said...

@Morgan: Knock yourself out. But I refer you to the Quiz title, which is "Species," not "Sub-Species."

You do, however, win the special TQXLVII Lapel Pin for Cleverest Remark About Dick Cheney.
