Some tough ones in here
Michigan (Tuebor!)
Iowa (Wisconsin sort of looks like they a NY flag and wrote their name on it)
Illinois for the sunshine
Nebraska, I guess. At least their seal has a blacksmith.
Montana. SD is nice design-wise, but they need to advertise Mt. Rushmore, in words, on their flag?

1. Michigan, I guess
2. Wisconsin
3. Missouri; at least it's a sort of tricolour
4. Indiana; better graphically
5. Sheesh! I'll go with Nebraska since it uses just two colors.
6. Montana, since we can make out the picture.

Double for Indiana. It's the only one in this group that has any appeal.

1 - Michigan and it's mighty hooved beasts!

2. I want to say Iowa because I like the eagle better than the seal... but North Dakota's eagle is so much more bad-ass. I wish all the eagles with banners in their mouths were up against each other. And well... to that end I guess I'll have to vote Iowa.

3. Illinois and 4. North Dakota... can't wait for the Eagle/banner throwdown!

5. Nebraska because blacksmithing is much cooler than ... what's the guy doing, mowing a lawn???

6. Ok - is that industrial pollution being celebrated in the middle of South Dakota's flag?? And do they really need their name on the flag TWICE?? Montana!

Rebel said...

OH South Dakota... I just clicked a bigger image, and there's *another* banner inside the seal? Three lines of text, really??? And now that I'm thinking of it - why does it *say* mount rushmore... but not show it? Boooooo South Dakota... bad flag, worst in the field!!!

Iowa (love this one and I'd never seen it before)
both bad but Minnesota
again, both poor but Montana

Seems like the flying flags are at a disadvantage because you can't see all the detail. Or maybe it's an advantage because they look so happy flapping away.

Kansas - Ad Astra per Aspirin!
Iowa I guess
Indiana - tough decision as they both have their charms
Minnesota though I expect neither will advance to the 3rd round
Montana - that "Mount Rushmore State" really bugs me. There's so much more to SoDak - like the Corn Palace and stock car racing. The Montana flag seems happy.

1. Michigan, because of the high percentage of ungulates and cryptic phrases. I particularly like TUEBOR, and expect to see it written in red lipstick on a mirror.
2. I support the unions, and the men in period costume, of the state of Wisconsin.
3. Illinois, for its feathered sun and barfing eagle.
4. Well, Indiana, obviously, for symmetry and clarity and starriness, and also because I was born there and they'd probably revoke my birth certificate if I didn't vote for this flag. And North Dakota's eagle is kind of creepy.
5. Nebraska - nearly as busy as Minnesota, but in a much more accessible way. And I like the motto.
6. Montana! as it says on its flag.

Regional super awesome vote goes to Indiana, natch.

North Dakota (love the scrolly thing outlining the name)

Is it just me or do a lot in this group have their state names on the flag? I like it this way!

1. KS
2. IA
3. IL

5. MN
6. MT

1. Michigan over Kansas. Born in Michigan, so that's my vote.

2. Iowa over Wisconsin. The tricolor is nice.

3. Missouri over Illinios. See comment for #2.

4. Indiana over North Dakota. They both feature a lot of stars, but Indiana's is less cluttered.

5. Minnesota over Nebraska. I like the star points made out of stars. Sorta.

6. Montana over South Dakota. Mining for precious metals wins out slightly over mining for tourists.

Morgan said...

Kansas, because it has less picture and more KANSAS.

Iowa for interesting and because the blue ribbon looks cool.

Missouri for bears.

Indiana for interesting and all the stars facing the same way.

Nebraska, because even though it is kinda generic it isn't ugly like the competition.

South Dakota for the color scheme and cool non-color drawing in the seal.

I see I managed to leave my votes under the postcard. Duh. Pasting, pasting......

1. Michigan Rampant animals get my attention!
2. Both flags offend by splashing their names all over, but IOWA makes it fairly handsome. And I like that gymnastic sport of ribbon twirling, especially when done by an eagle.
3. Too much white, Illinois, plus that sun is something you'd see on LSD. Missouri by default, but I expect it will go down soon.
4. Indiana, although it looks like a giant sparkler. The ND eagle is deformed.
5. Nebraska for only having 3 colors, though both are too, too fussy. Get the hook! Better yet, two hooks!
6. Montana's landscape seal is simple and bold, enough to beguile me into voting with it over SD

Extra vote to IOWA.

I forgot to vote for Indiana over North Dakota. And it was my favorite one! Two votes for Indiana!

Michigan - Moose! Strange text in other languages! Not feeling the need to write "MICHIGAN" on it!

Iowa - Isn't it cool that the image was captured when all the text on that ribbon was pointing in the right direction? (I like to think it's because it's a very talented eagle.) All the Wisconsin flag has going for it is that it has a badger on it (though you wouldn't be able to tell from a distance).

Missouri - If you're just going to put your state seal on something choosing a tricolor's nice (certainly better than a plain white background), and I like grizzly bears.

Indiana - Nice flag! +1! (North Dakota: Putting the American Eagle in a slightly more realistic flying posture was a vaguely interesting idea, but here it just looks overburdened and uncomfortable.)

Nebraska - I like the reduced color scheme, and the seal is more legible than Minnesota (though I do like Minnesota's star-thing, if they did it in a way that didn't cut into seal legibility, I would approve.)

Montana - relatively simple/well designed as seals go. South Dakota: I actually like your colors and your design better (even if you seal is illegible at a distance), but "The Mount Rushmore State" is a tourism slogan not a state motto and shouldn't be on a flag.

I second Rebel's call for a bad-ass Eagle showdown (though after seeing American Samoa's entry in the next round, I think that's where my money has to be.)

This was tough. I love the ungulates rampant and the little guy ice fishing, but I can really do without the armed eagle. I dislike the armed eagle, especially coupled with all those scrolls, enough that I would give it to the tiny cows and horses and I believe symmetrically-arranged tiny birds, but damnit Kansas, it's a flag, not the label of the t-shirt you're taking to summer camp. You don't need your name on it.

Just to show it's the fist full of armaments and not the eagles I object to, this eagle is adorable. I want him at my birthday party. Wisconsin tries to win me over with a beaver, but no dice. Also, what's the triangle for, Wisconsin?

Puking eagle versus ursines rampant. I'm going to pretend neither flag bears the monstrosities those states call seals, and just mark them on the field. So the win goes to to the Netherlands over France.

I continue to be impressed by either your ability to match up similar flags or the states' inability to come up with original, or even vaguely appealing ideas. ND should have been paired with Illinois, though, so we could have a better eagle showdown. Indiana gets this one for picking one thing to put on their flag, and by not having an ugly eagle.

These flags are both seals on blue fields, so I have to examine the seals themselves. I think we have a blacksmith in a lake, with a house and a choo-choo train in the background versus, is it a guy mowing the lawn at a polo field? Also the latter motto appears to be "l'e'toile du l'ord" or "the star of filth."

All I have to say to South Dakota is, "Don't put your tourism slogans on your state flag, and if you're going to put a seal on, at least make it bright and colourful." Montana, you only got away with your crimes against flagdom by not making me want to hurt you. Mind you, given the rest of this bracket, you may survive a few more rounds on that alone.

And Indiana gets my double vote, too.
