The Infinite Art Tournament Left Bracket Third-Round Elimination: Courbet v. G. David!

Gerard David lost to the French caricaturist Honoré Daumier in the First Round, but has stayed alive through four subsequent matches in the Left Brackets.  He has ousted an increasingly impressive string of opponents: Stuart Davis, Delacroix, Delaunay, and most recently Salvidor Dali.  But now he must take on a Gustave Courbet who is fresh from a victory over whom?  Over David's old nemesis Daumier, that's whom.

Both David and Courbet faced tough fights to make it to this round.  Daumier's record of 2-2-1, with 30 votes for and 29 votes against (.508) ranks him among the top twenty artists to leave the Tournament to date, whereas Dali's 2-2-1; 41 vf, 28 va; .594 puts him at fourth place among the 147 former contestants.

David for me.

A close one for me. But despite my love of David's colors, his people's stiffness and lack of expression will lean me slightly to Courbet.

Personally, I'm slightly sheepishly going for David on this one.

Courbet can certainly seem a bit much at times--I can imagine Johnny Depp starring in a biopic penned by D.H. Lawrence--but he's got pretty remarkable range. I will vote for him over the talented but easier to miss David.

It looks like it's going to be Courbet over David, eight votes to six! Gerard had a heck of a run after losing his First Round match to Daumier, though, and gets credit or blame for being the Man Who Ousted Dali. He outlasted Daumier, too. But, it's Courbet who continues on to meet Diebenkorn this week.
