The Monday Quiz XV

1. Name this country!

2. Element 34 is a non-metal "chalcogen" element like Sulfur or Tellurium. You don't need all that much of it, but your enzymes won't work without it. What's its name?

3. It's the Wikipedia page for Faransiiska.  But in what language?

4. Trouble in the Middle East: Israel, the UK, and France invade Egypt, but are forced to withdraw a few weeks later by the United States and the Soviet Union. The ruckus is often thought to symbolize "the end of Great Britain's role as one of the world's major powers." What do we usually call this important historical event?

5. From the clear parallel striping, you can tell right away that this rock face is ______________ in origin.  Right?

6. It's the figure of speech, according to Merriam-Webster, "by which a part is put for the whole (as "fifty sail" for fifty ships), the whole for a part (as "society" for high society), the species for the genus (as "cutthroat" for assassin), the genus for the species (as a "creature" for a man), or the name of the material for the thing made (as "boards" for stage)." What's the word?

7. I cut out a white square that included the title of this famous record.  What is that title?

8. It is what we call the philosophical movement of medieval times "characterized chiefly by speculative thought [and] the merging of theological conceptions with metaphysical ones." We tend to belittle it in our enlightened age, despite that it was practiced by smart guys like Thomas Aquinas.

9. This painting of the four Daughters of Edward Darley Boit is thought by many critics to be a masterpiece of psychological portraiture.  Who painted it?

10. It's the one that states that the entropy of the entire universe, since it is a closed and isolated system, will always increase over time.

9 I love this painting! I know the artist, but sinister forces have somehow conspired to nail shut that little memory cell and hang a "Gone Fishin'" sign on it. Clearly I am not going to be allowed back in until after I've taken the quiz.
10 Oh, I don't know. Schrodinger's second law.
