The Songs of the Fifty States: Montana

(What is "The Songs of the Fifty States"?)

When the Land Belonged to God, by Montana "cowboy artist" C.M. Russell

Montana!

Size: 380,800 km2 (4th)

2013 Population: 1,015,165 (44th)

Statehood: 1889 (41st).

American Human Development Index: 4.54 (39th)

Art Mecca: Montana doesn't have a large population, nor any large cities.  Not surprisingly, it's a little thin in the art museum department. But, the Montana Museum of Art & Culture at the University of Montana has a fairly robust roster of brand-name artists in its permanent collection: Rembrandt, Millet, Picasso, Chagall, and the like.

If you are going to make "MMAC" a highlight of your visit to the Missoula area, plan carefully: It's only open noon to 3 p.m. most days, and is closed both Sundays and Mondays.  Also it apparently doesn't really have a proper building of its own, and is spread out over a couple of UM buildings.

Atlas of All Roads Travelled

There is technically quite a bit of Montana to the east of what is shown here.  I've never been in that part.

Plans and Aspirations

I don't really have any Montana plans on tap, but it's only a few states away.
