The Infinite Art Tournament, Left Bracket Third Round: Géricault v. Magritte!

You wouldn't have expected Théodore Géricault to end up in a match against René Magritte, but then again you really wouldn't have expected there to be an Infinite Art Tournament in the first place.  Géricault hangs on into the Third Round by eliminating Ambrogio Lorenzetti, while Magritte falls into this match after being defeated by Andy Goldsworthy in the Right Bracket Third Round.

Théodore Géricault
1791 - 1824
French

René Magritte
1898 - 1967
Belgian

  • Skunked -- skunked! -- sculptor Aristide Maillol in Round 1.
  • Won a close one against Mabuse in Round 2.
  • Lost badly to Andy Goldsworthy in Round 3.

This is one of the first cases of "comments on the IAT have significantly shifted how I feel about an artist". Géricault.

Magritte can certainly be accused of not being as deep as he first seems. But there is just something his aesthetic and tongue-in-cheek surrealism I adore. Magritte.

Hmmm. Well, I hemmed and hawed a bit, but I'll go with Magritte.

Susan votes for Gericault.

I'm hemming and hawing too, but I'm sympathetic to boonec1974 here and will go for Magritte.

Mmm. Magritte.

Well, that makes it seven votes for Magritte, and three for Gericault. Magritte will take on Lotto next week in Third Round Elimination!
