The Monday Quiz, Etc.

Yo, it's The Monday Quiz!

This week's topic is:

American Lit

All of the following are lit. But are they American?

1. A Farewell to Arms
2. The Great Gatsby
3. The Scarlet Letter
4. A Tale of Two Cities
5. To the Lighthouse

Extra Credit: The English Patient

The Weekend Football Round-Up

It was a terrific week for college football, if you happen to share my predilictions.

#9 Oregon 53, Washington State 7. What this game lacked in excitement, it made up for in a certain joyful ass-whupping.

Oregon State 31, #2 California 28. Oh my. Oh my. What this game lacked in ass-whupping, it made up for in excitement. One of the most thrilling games since last year's.... oh, never mind.

#6 Oklahoma 41, #11 Missouri 31. Damn straight.

Add to this a dethroning of those damn LSU Tigers, and a jolly romp by the Kansans over Baylor, and I was a very happy little football enthuasist.

The Meaningful Pause: a Marital Drama in Two Lines

michael5000: "Would you totally drop me like a hot rock if you had a shot at John Cusack?"

Mrs.5000: "Well...."

The Truth Was In Front of Us All Along

I found a box of VCR tapes of the X-Files in the basement this summer, and I've been watching them all before throwing them out.

Back in the day, I was as confused as everyone else about the season-to-season story arc of the X-Files. But this time around, I've got it all figured out. The trick is, everything makes sense as soon as you realize that "the Cigarette Smoking Man":

...is really W.H. Auden.

OK, that's enough out of me. See you later.

I have decided to crash your Monday quiz :-)

1.) yes
2.) yup.
3.) Yea
4.) No
5.) Nope.

Woo, and my family says being an English major isn't good for anything. Ha!

Have a nice week!

I'm gonna say 1-3 are, but 4 and 5 are not, but only because I'm assuming that Mrs. 5000 and Allie know what they're talking about.

And Mrs. 5000: relax, that Marital Drama in Two Lines would look just the same in my house if you replaced John Cusak, great as he is, with Sting, only I would have no hesistation whatsoever.

The English Patient is not.

1. A Farewell to Arms - isn't
2. The Great Gatsby - is
3. The Scarlet Letter - is
4. A Tale of Two Cities - isn't
5. To the Lighthouse - I can't remember where Virginia Woolf was from... guessing American.

Extra Credit: The English Patient - I never read the book, fell asleep 2 minutes into the movie. I guess it is American, otherwise it would just be "The Patient". ;)

PS - it's called the "Myth-arc" and should not be confused with "Monster-of-the-week" episodes.

Michael5000 said...

@Rebel: Also "Mythology" vs. "MotW." Give me MotW any day, hand's down. Love them monsters.

easy! yes, yes, yes, no, no, no.

boomer! sooner! down with LSU!

I wonder if I inspired you with my Trimalchio in the West Egg references.

1. Yes (by Hemingway, an American... but takes place in Europe. I assume you mean the author's nationality?).
2. Yes.
3. Yes.
4. No
5. No.

English Patient=YES! Written by a Sri Lankin who grew up in Canada and who is of Canadian nationality. Main character (the nurse) is French Canadian. ...So the book is American because you didn't specify that it should be United States American. haHA! And yes, I knew all this already.

do we get bonus points for naming the authors?

1-3 yes
4-5 and extra credit, no

this was much easier than the science one on thurs. thanks for making me not feel so stupid this time.

John Cusack is a special case. Besides, I wouldn't feel bad if I were you since Mrs5000 said she'd drop you like a HOT rock. As long as she thinks you're hot too, y'know...

Oh man. You tapped into MDIC's weakest knowledge point--literature.

1. A Farewell to Arms--yes?
2. The Great Gatsby--yes?
3. The Scarlet Letter--no?
4. A Tale of Two Cities--no.
5. To the Lighthouse--no?

PS, I'd drop anyone for John Cusack. In a nanosecond.

I have to give props to g for saying pretty much everything that could possibly said about the extra credit question. For the regular questions, as allie had it,

1.) yes
2.) yup.
3.) Yea
4.) No
5.) Nope.

Speaking of g, those of you who felt unchallenged by today's quiz might follow back to her blog and try the literary trivia question at the end of this post. I don't think anybody has got it right yet.

Well quizzed, people!
