The Thursday Quiz L

The Thursday Quiz!

The Thursday Quiz is an "Is It or Isn't It" game. From the list of twelve items, your job is to determine whether each IS or ISN'T a true example of the week's category.

Remember always the rules of the game:
No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. The Thursday
Quiz is a POP quiz. Violators will find themselves on permanent vacation.
This Week's Category will throw down some massive noise from the bleachers!

You left out my favorite: the University of California Santa Cruz Banana Slugs

I have no idea on any of them because I would be doing good to list 5 NFL teams that were not a local team to a place I have lived in the US. I would be doing good to be able to list NFL teams at all let alone college

If only I'd spent a few hours poring over the College Football Preview you so thoughtfully left on the kitchen table last night--
if only I'd glanced at its contents--

1 uh, yes?
2 yes! um, at least that's what is sung they call Alabama. . .
3 they're hot! um, no?
4 uh, yes?
5 uh, yes?
6 uh, uh, no?
7 uh, no
8 crazy, but I think yes?
9 YES! The Stanford Cardinal! There's only one!
10 I have way too many yeses, don't I? uh, yes
11 uh, no
12 uh, no

and now since the season is nigh upon us I will recite the marital catechism of the PAC-10:
Firstly the tribes of Oregon the righteous, that are the U of O Ducks and the Oregon State Beavs.
Secondly the tribes of the north, that are YouDub beloved of Bill and WahZoo beloved of Tom.
Thirdly the desert tribes, that are Arizona State and the U of A, and some will say quietly go Wildcats. Fourthly the California tribes, and these are the most plentiful and difficult to remember: the USC, the UCLA, the (Cardinal of) Stanford and, um, UCal?

I'm not a sports fan and in glancing at the list I realized that I only knew two for sure (one school I worked at, one school I attended), so I'll see whether I can beat the odds when I guess:

1. no
2. yes (heard the name, don't know whether it's that school)
3. no
4. no
5. no
6. no
7. no
8. no
9. yes
10. no
11. no
12. no
Well, I hadn't expected to guess NO so many times, but those names are ridiculous!

And with the dust settling over the 50th running of the Thursday Quiz, we find that football fan DrSchnell snuck in under the wire with a perfect score to secure the TQL Gold Star! With four Golds in his trophy case, he is tied for second on the all-time Gold Standard list.

KarmaSartre pegs 11/12 for the Silver Star, his third. It is his twelfth Star overall, moving him into fifth place on the all-time leaderboard.

Cartophiliac takes the Blue Star with 10/12; it is his second and his 11th Star overall.

La gringissima and Rex Parker match Carto to bring home Green Stars. It's la gringa's second Green and seventh Star overall. It is Rex's seventh Green, which means he has pulled even with the one-time undisputed Queen of Green, Mrs.5000.

And, I apologize to those of you in the non-Unitedstatesian contingent, for whom this Quiz was patently unfair. You will, however, have an advantage next week with the topic of "football clubs of Portugal."

Just kidding.

In fact, next week the Quizzes will be off for the seasonal break. Next week, we'll review the champions of the season just past. The Monday Quiz 5th Season will kick off on Labor Day, September 1; The Thurday Quiz 6th Season starts on September 4th. Be ready!

Are golden flashes somehow related to hot flashes?

12. isn't?

Michael5000 said...

@dan: Would have scored you the Blue, had it been on time. But it is "Cardinal," not "Cardinals." For some reason.

@drschnell: Yes! It's a name that invokes the concepts of both hot flashes and golden showers, neither of which we need to be associating with young scholar-athletes!

@karma: Yes, "Zips" is pretty bad too. But not as bad as "Golden Flashes."

Cardinal is the color not the bird.

Michael5000 said...

@karma: Right! I just learned that last night. Like the Cornell Big Red or the Alabama Crimson Tide.

So sad to have missed this one, and offer my favorite mascot:

The Delta State University Fighting Okra.

This name appeared as a clue in the venerable NYT crossword about 6 months ago. The school's original / official mascot is the Statesman. But after the Fighting Okra appeared, including an Okra-man in costume, they are now essentially parallel mascots.
