It's like these are purposefully obscure skylines of very famous cities, or very famous skylines of less famous cities. Tough tough quiz today.

Isn't there a prize for offering the most exotic, least-considered names? If anyone gets more than two, I suggest a Congressional investigation! Ouch, ouch, ouch!

1. Seattle! as in, Viva! Seattle Tacoma, viva viva Sea-Tac
riding high from the euphoria of getting one right2. wtf?
totally deflated
um. . . Sydney?
3. Chicago? (am I getting any points for bona fide city names? Okay. You can infer the question marks after all answers from here on out; I don't want to wear that key out on the keyboard)
4. someplace in Europe, like, uh, damn. Brussels
5. someplace warmer than #4. Urg. I can't think of the name of the city I want to say, so I'll say the wrong one because I hate leaving blanks. Cairo.
6. Stockholm
7. Athens
8. Paris
9. Hong Kong

P.S. This may just be the nightmare category for me, combining, as it does, places, about which I know little, with looking at things, which I never seem to do the same way as anybody else. Ironically, I perversely like it for just those reasons--not so much for the way it exposes my deep, deep ignorance but for the way it makes me think about things a way I don't normally, and that's always good.

You'd think that watching the Amazing Race would prepare me better for quizzes like this, but apparently not.

1. Seattle
2. Hmmm... funky.... how about Hong Kong?
3. Chicago?
4. London?
5. As long as we're guessing, might as well go with something totally random - Riyadh
6. I've definitely seen the second picture before, and have absolutely no clue where it is. Umm, Berlin.
7. Definitely looks Mediterranean - Naples.
8. Yet another one that looks vaguely familiar. Well, I'm too lazy to come up with anything but Paris.
9. Umm, Tokyo?

Alright! Time for the answers!

1. As everyone immediately recognized, this is SEATTLE.

2. What I thought would be the second-easiest, it's the unique business district of one of the largest and most important commercial centers of the world, SHANGHAI. Apparently, all y'all are not following the growth of the new China, nor reading about its exciting new buildings in the kinds of fancy-schmansy architecture magazines that Mrs.5000 subscribes to. Not even Mrs.5000, apparently.

3. CHICAGO

4. LONDON

5. DUBAI

6. MADRID. A shout-out to the Iberian readers, in partial payment for the times they've given their best shot at obscure Americana.

7. RIO DE JANEIRO. There were accusations that I was using deliberately obscure skyline photos. This is true in the limited sense of me not including the giant statue of Jesus in the Rio picture, I suppose....

8. ...and in choosing a picture from, not of, the Eiffel Tower to represent PARIS.

9. The one I thought would be the really hard one, almost everybody nailed: KUALA LUMPUR.

So once again, I radically failed the game of "Family Feud" that is the weekly task of putting the Monday Quiz pictures in order from easiest to hardest.

Annie identified 9/9 to take top honors in the Monday Quiz. Her 25 Decathlon points puts her back in the lead with 109.5, just two points ahead of d.

Eversaved hit 8/9, putting her in a tie for the third spot (with Missy) at 106.5 points.

MQ LXXII Exclamation Points also to Elizabeth, la gringissima, Mrs.5000, Kadonkadonk, and Missy, all of whom correctly IDed 7 of 9 cities.

Well done all around!

geography is my kryptonite.

So how come everyone knew that last one was Kuala Lumpur? I don't even have the least idea where on the globe that is, let alone what the skyline looks like.. (maybe I'm just bitter because I have yet to get an even slightly respectable score in this decathalon).

Elaine said...

Oh, Balaywho,
You have ME there, right next to you at the bottom! I think I only got two right, but am too lazy to check. I should have gotten Rio, but that synapse was disabled.... Kuala Lumpur? How do people know this place?

Rebel said...

Those are the Petronas towers, two of the tallest (if not *the* tallest) buildings in the world.

I'm with d - geography is my kryptonite... well, I guess trivia in general is my kryptonite as I don't go around collecting random facts about things I've never done and places I've never seen. Which makes me ill suited for most of these quizes. =/
